International President Ed Hill has been encouraging all Locals across the country to create a Young Worker Group within each local. The purpose is to introduce the Union both the International and Local Union a little differently than has been presented in the past to help understand the workings of the Union and what we stand for. It is also the perfect opportunity to get involved as Officers and Stewards and to participate in contract negotiations just to mention a few.
This group will consist of members below the age of 35. In short the Young Worker Groups will work independent of the local union but will work closely with the local’s officers.
We are pleased to announce that Local 245 is developing a Young Workers Group! At this time we would like to invite you to become part of this new and exciting group. This invitation is only going out to our members below the age of 35. The first meeting of the Young Workers will be Wednesday June 3, 2015 at 6:30 PM.
Following this initial meeting the group will hold its meetings at 6:30 P.M. on the second Thursday of every month. The Young Workers Group meeting will be led and directed by the young workers.
The local 245 leadership is excited about putting the ideas of the Young Workers Group into action. Some of the expected changes from the Young Workers Group might be creating new technology driven communication platforms. As some examples the local is looking for ideas to improve the IBEW 245 web site and Facebook page. We need new innovative ideas on how to create better communication networks between the young workers and between the rest of the membership. Creating and implementing social events outside of the workplace is another area that IBEW young worker groups across the country have had great success.
Along with assisting in building the Young Workers Group, the union hall has future plans of sending some of the group members to yearly Young Worker Conferences. These are great opportunities to further your training and education. There will be workshops and training activities focused on investing in the future of our organization.
